Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

A trek that takes you to the base of Annapurna 1 where you are surrounded by a circle of high mountains towering almost vertically above you. The route in is not too taxing, more a gradual push up. Starting from Birethanti we trek up to Ghorapani for a spectacular sunrise view of both the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Nepal. Trek along the ridge down through a river bed to reach Tadapani. The next day, trek down through a wood to the kyumnu khola before a climb up to the trail that leads on to Chomrong. After leaving Chomrong we say goodbye to all permanent settlements. The trek climbs through dense bamboo jungle to finally rise above the vegetation line and makes for a narrow notch between the sheer lower flanks of Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli. Once past the sanctuary the trek ascends through glacial moraine and up to a cluster of huts ("Machhapuchhre Base Camp") where many people stay overnight. An hour or so further from here you reach Annapurna Base camp (4130m). The views within the basin are spectacular, people either spend the whole day here and lodge overnight or a couple of hours before trekking back the way they came. There is an opportunity on the return to bathe in the hot spring at Jhinu.

Annapurna Base Camp or the Annapurna Sanctuary is one of the most magnificent viewpoints in Nepal, reaching the high mountains in a relatively short time without the extreme altitudes of the Everest region. This trek takes us to Annapurna Base Camp, throne room of the Gods where we are surrounded by the great peaks of the Annapurna range. The south face of Annapurna 1, climbed by Sir Chris Bonnington rears above us and we can trace the route up its sheer face. The trek itself takes us first to Poon Hill for one of the most spectacular sunrise views in Nepal.

We then trek across to the gates of the Annapurna Sanctuary, a narrow valley which we ascend to through a variety of scenery including terraced farmland, rhododendron and dwarf bamboo forests to the higher alpine pastures. We have time to explore the base camp area before returning to Pokhara.
